The coalition of the Union and SPD has agreed not to extend the fuel discount, the Süddeutsche Zeitung reports, citing coalition sources. The roughly €1.6 billion tax break was introduced two months ago to artificially lower high fuel prices.
No replacement for the fuel discount is currently planned. However, the coalition is monitoring the situation and will respond if the situation in the Persian Gulf escalates again and oil prices rise sharply. Instead, the government is considering new, more targeted relief for citizens.
