On Monday, the national daily average for diesel stood at 1.816 euros per liter, according to the ADAC. Super E10 gasoline cost 1.868 euros. Both fuels were only a few cents more expensive than on the last day before the war began. At the peak of the crisis, diesel had been more than 70 cents above the pre-war level, and E10 more than 40 cents.
The German government’s fuel discount reduces the tax per liter by 16.7 cents. It is valid only until the end of August and will not be extended. Experts welcome the expiration of the measure. After the discount ends, prices could rise again – at least diesel, based on Monday’s price, remained below two euros per liter even without the tax break.
Oil prices have recently fallen significantly, also due to signs of détente in the Middle East. The ADAC had criticized that lower oil prices were only slowly reaching consumers. Current figures from Tuesday morning point to further declines: at 8:45 a.m., diesel averaged 1.764 euros, and E10 1.826 euros.
