Compared with the same month last year, the number of unemployed rose by 22,000. Demand for labor stabilized at a low level, according to the agency: 648,000 job vacancies were registered, 16,000 more than a year earlier.
“There is hardly any change to be seen in the labor market. Unemployment is falling only slightly, and employment subject to social security contributions continues its slight downward trend,” said Andrea Nahles, chairwoman of the Federal Employment Agency. Around 1.052 million people received unemployment benefits in June – 90,000 more than a year earlier.
The number of working-age citizens receiving basic income support fell by 104,000 year-on-year to 3.804 million. Overall, 7.0 percent of people of working age depended on assistance. Labor market researchers see demographic change as a growing problem: baby boomer employees are retiring while too few younger workers are entering the workforce.
