Germany and Poland Sign Defense Agreement

Germany and Poland plan to sign a defense agreement on June 17, announced German Ambassador to Miguel Berger at the Impact'26 conference in Poznań, as reported by Polish news agency PAP.

The agreement is intended to create a legal framework for the already close defense cooperation, Berger said. Negotiations are still ongoing, but the treaty text is largely complete. Polish Deputy Defense Minister Paweł Zalewski confirmed the plans to PAP, stating: “That is our plan.”

The date June 17 was chosen deliberately: on that day in 1991, German Helmut Kohl and Jan Krzysztof Bielecki signed the German-Polish Neighborhood Treaty. The new agreement builds on this anniversary and aims to deepen military cooperation.

Poland already signed a similar agreement with France last year. Warsaw also works closely with Britain, especially on supporting Ukraine. Donald Tusk announced the planned signing in early May after a meeting with British leader Keir Starmer.

Relations between Germany and Poland are considered strained despite their close partnership within NATO and the EU. The defense agreement is now intended to send a signal of understanding and strengthen security cooperation in Europe.
