Germany’s inflation rate fell to 2.6 percent in May, down from 2.8 percent in April, the Federal Statistical Office reported. Economists had on average expected the rate to remain unchanged.

Statisticians cite the fuel discount, which took effect on June 1, as one reason for the decline. However, they note that this is a short-term effect. Without the discount, inflation would likely have been higher.

Consumer prices rose in May mainly for energy and food. Core inflation, which excludes energy and food, stood at 3.0 percent.
