The IOC session, comprising around 100 members, is set to determine the host city for the 2036 Summer Olympics in mid-2029. The committee’s extraordinary general assembly approved the procedure on Wednesday in Lausanne. With this, new IOC Kirsty Coventry is overriding parts of the reforms introduced by her predecessor Thomas Bach.
The German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB) is vying for the Games in 2036, 2040, or 2044. It is currently in a so-called continuous dialogue with the IOC and is considered an official candidate. Which German city—Berlin, Munich, or Cologne-Ruhr-Rhine—will enter the race will be decided by the DOSB at its general meeting in September.
The IOC has reformed the bidding process and introduced a pre-selection phase. In March 2027, the Executive Committee will open a strategic dialogue, a new intermediate step. By the end of 2028, a targeted dialogue could begin, culminating in reports from the Future Host Commission. The IOC session will then vote in mid-2029—possibly in a contested vote.
