Imamoglu, who has been under scrutiny from the Turkish judiciary since his dismissal in 2021, appeared before the court in Istanbul on Monday. He described the allegations as unfounded and part of a political campaign against him and his party, the Republican People's Party (CHP).
"This indictment is not only directed at me but against democracy in Turkey," Imamoglu stated during his defense. He emphasized that the accusations lack substantial evidence and are merely aimed at silencing him.
The charges stem from investigations related to the activities of the CHP. Imamoglu was elected mayor in 2019 and has since established himself as a prominent voice of the opposition. His dismissal has been viewed by many as politically motivated.
The trial is being closely followed by numerous supporters and media, highlighting the significance of the case for Turkish politics. If convicted, Imamoglu could face imprisonment, which could further destabilize the political landscape in Turkey.
