Russia’s Supreme Court has rejected the appeal of the opposition party Jabloko against its exclusion from the parliamentary elections. The party, which advocates an immediate ceasefire in Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine, will thus not be able to take part in the State Duma election in September. The court had excluded Jabloko from the election last week. According to its own statements, the party will now file a supervisory complaint with the presidium of the Supreme Court, Jabloko announced.
The pro-government nationalist party Rodina had filed a lawsuit against Jabloko, accusing it of, among other things, copyright violations. Another accusation concerned the party’s campaign financing. According to the Russian financial supervisory authority, Jabloko is said to have received donations totaling 16,900 rubles (about 170 euros) from Germany and the USA.
With this ruling, for the first time in Russia’s history, an already registered party has been excluded from the election.
Deputy party leader Lev Shlosberg has also recently been on the radar of the Russian judiciary. In a controversial trial, he was sentenced to eleven years and one month in a penal colony. He is accused of, among other things, discrediting the Russian armed forces. His party announced that Shlosberg would appeal the verdict.
