The Conference of Justice Ministers has spoken out in favor of better protection for local politicians against insults, as reported by Deutschlandfunk. Federal Minister of Justice Stefanie Hubig (SPD) supports the restriction of Section 188 of the Criminal Code, which deals with insults against politicians.
The initiative aims to make it easier to prosecute insults against elected officials. Currently, the section only applies to insults that are “related to the position of the person affected in public life” — a restriction that often creates high hurdles in practice.
The exact changes to the legal text are now to be worked out by a federal-state working group. A concrete timeline for implementation has not yet been set.
