The German government had planned to reduce pension entitlements for people caring for relatives. New Health Minister Carsten Linnemann now wants to scrap that measure.

The German government’s savings plans included a provision that people who care for relatives would receive lower pensions in the future. However, the new Health Minister, Carsten Linnemann, has announced he wants to correct this point. He does not want to save on the pensions of family caregivers, the CDU politician told Bild am Sonntag.

Linnemann, a member of the CDU, spoke to Bild am Sonntag and described those who care for others at home as “Germany’s everyday heroes.” Currently, long-term care insurance funds pay up to 740 euros per month in pension contributions for family caregivers under certain conditions. The original plan by his predecessor, Nina Warken, had proposed that only 70 percent of these amounts would be paid toward future pension entitlements.

Linnemann’s announcement was welcomed by various organizations, including the National Association of Statutory Health Insurance Funds (GKV) and the German Foundation for Patient Protection. Eugen Brysch, head of the German Foundation for Patient Protection, said Linnemann evidently wants to end the “political wrong turn” taken by his predecessor and party colleague Warken.
