Federal Defense Minister Boris Pistorius (SPD) arrived in Kyiv on Tuesday for an unannounced visit. According to Deutschlandfunk, discussions with Ukrainian leadership are centered on further military support. Pistorius aims to advance the construction of new high-tech weapons in collaboration with Ukraine.
The visit occurs against the backdrop of Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine. Since February 2022, Ukraine has been defending itself against the Russian invasion and relies on Western arms deliveries. Germany is among the key military supporters of Ukraine.
According to Reuters, Pistorius is expected to discuss the delivery of air defense systems and artillery ammunition. The specific details of the talks have not yet been disclosed. The minister is traveling to Kyiv to deepen cooperation and strengthen the Ukrainian armed forces.
The planned arms cooperation could include the production of drones and other modern weapon systems. As reported by FR, this involves a long-term partnership that also envisions the joint development of new technologies. Pistorius emphasized the importance of close coordination with Ukraine.
