Minister Boris Pistorius (SPD) presented his plans for reorganizing arms procurement to the Bundestag’s Defense Committee. According to Deutschlandfunk, Pistorius stressed the need to create conditions for faster decisions and a further increase in procurement volume. The processes at the responsible Federal Office for Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support (BAAINBw) must be fundamentally adjusted.
The Bundeswehr has suffered for years from lengthy procurement processes that often take years and are associated with significant cost increases. Pistorius now wants to counter this with a reform to equip the troops more quickly with modern equipment. The minister did not initially provide concrete details on the planned changes or a timeline in the committee.
The announcement comes against the backdrop of growing security policy challenges and the increase in the defense budget promised by the federal government. The reorganization is considered a central building block to increase the Bundeswehr’s operational readiness.
