State elections will be held in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Saxony-Anhalt in about three months. The respective ruling parties are using their party conferences to set the course for the election campaigns, reports Deutschlandfunk.
In Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, a coalition of the SPD and CDU governs. In Saxony-Anhalt, a Kenya coalition of the CDU, SPD and Greens forms the state government. The party conferences serve to adopt election manifestos and nominate candidates.
The elections are considered an important mood test for the federal government and the political situation in eastern Germany. Observers expect difficult election campaigns given the tense economic situation and high inflation.
