Ukraine hits rocket factory in Volgograd with Flamingo cruise missiles

The Ukrainian army attacked an arms factory in the Russian million-strong city of Volgograd overnight. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Flamingo cruise missiles struck the facilities of the Titan-Barrikady plant and set them on fire.

Volgograd Governor Andrei Bocharov acknowledged damage to the production facilities of a company but gave no details on what was manufactured there. According to his information, at least ten people were injured. He spoke of fast-moving objects, presumably referring to the cruise missiles. Several local fires had been extinguished, and residential buildings were not affected.

According to media reports, the Titan-Barrikady factory produces components for Iskander, Yars, and Topol-M missiles, which can in principle also carry nuclear warheads. The plant is also said to be involved in the production of Russia’s new Oreshnik intermediate-range missile, which is considered difficult to intercept and has been used only three times in the entire war.

Ukraine has been defending itself against Russia’s war of aggression for more than four years. In recent months, it has stepped up attacks on strategically important targets deep inside Russia — mostly with drones, but also repeatedly with its domestically developed Flamingo cruise missiles. In addition to arms factories and military facilities, the Ukrainians are also targeting oil industry installations. On Friday, the Russian administration on the occupied Ukrainian peninsula of Crimea declared a state of emergency due to the attacks.
