According to the UNHCR annual report, as of July 2025, more than 117 million people were displaced worldwide, as reported by Spiegel. In 2024, the number had reached a tragic peak of over 123 million. Of the 117.3 million displaced, 36.4 million are officially recognized as refugees.
The largest displacement wave was triggered by the conflict in Sudan. Afghanistan also remains a hotspot. According to UNHCR, around 5.4 million refugees have returned since 2023 – most of them not voluntarily. The situation for the Rohingya is particularly dire: 6,500 of them fled across the Indian Ocean in 2025, with 900 dying or going missing – more than ever before.
In 2025, UNHCR had only $3.5 billion at its disposal – about as much as ten years ago. Over the same period, the number of refugees has nearly doubled. Aid organizations criticize that the international community is increasingly losing interest in the crisis.
