Uniper has launched a test run for the renovation of the Loisach-Isar Canal (LIK) near Wolfratshausen. The company is injecting bentonite into the canal bed to improve sealing. This trial is taking place east of the Geltinger Curve, where a pontoon floats on the water to determine the best sealing method, as explained by Uniper spokesperson Theodoros Reumschüssel.

The renovation efforts have already caused discontent among residents and some city council members. Wolfratshausen List had campaigned ahead of the local elections and initiated a petition to protect the habitat. Manfred Fleischer, a city council member from the Wolfratshausen List, reports that more than 560 signatures have been collected and will soon be officially submitted.

Climate representative Hans Schmidt criticized the group, calling their actions “pure demagoguery.” He emphasizes that the renovation work is necessary to address leaks in the over one-hundred-year-old canal, which led to flooding in 2023.

April, Uniper has refilled the section in the Geltinger Curve to a water level of one meter. The renovation includes the removal of trees and vegetation to install geotextile sealing membranes and other materials designed to prevent water from leaking out of the canal.
