Yasmin Fahimi begins her second term at the helm of the German Trade Union Confederation (DGB). At the federal congress in Berlin-Neukölln, she received 96 percent of the votes from around 400 delegates, indicating broad support for her leadership. In her hour-long keynote speech, she emphasized the challenges facing the union, including Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine and inflation.
Fahimi, the first woman in this position, expressed her determination and highlighted the responsibility of trade unions during times of economic crisis. "We must stand united to represent the interests of workers," she stated. Her re-election, with three percentage points more than in 2022, underscores the need for solidarity within the DGB.
The challenges Fahimi faces are numerous. In addition to the war in Ukraine, she also sees the unpredictable tariff policy of the U.S. President and the general economic downturn as significant issues. "We must advocate for workers' rights and find solutions," Fahimi continued.
Yasmin Fahimi was born in 1967 to an Iranian father and a German mother and grew up near Hanover. After studying chemistry, she began her career with the Industrial Union of Mining, Chemistry, and Energy (IG BCE) and quickly rose through the ranks.
