In a speech on May 10, Ukrainian President Zelensky remarked that Ukraine has "pushed a little" to achieve Vladimir Putin's willingness for negotiations. Despite these signs, the situation at the front remains tense as Russia continues its intense assaults on Ukrainian positions.
Zelensky stressed that Ukraine has long been ready for talks and that a concrete format for negotiations must now be established. "We need to end this warfare and ensure reliable security guarantees for Ukraine," he stated. These comments come amid preparations for an exchange of 1,000 prisoners facilitated by the United States.
Putin had previously stated that the war in Ukraine is "approaching its end," though he did not provide a specific timeline. He also reiterated that the withdrawal of Russian troops from Kyiv in 2022 was at the request of French Emmanuel Macron and accused Western "globalist elites" of prolonging the war.
The Ukrainian government insists that all negotiations must not only halt hostilities but also include lasting security guarantees for Ukraine. Zelensky warned that Ukraine would respond immediately if Russia resumes large-scale attacks.
