South Korea celebrated a 2-1 victory against the Czech Republic at the 2026 World Cup, as reported by Zeit. Hwang In-beom (68th minute) and Oh Hyeon-gyu (80th) scored for the Asians after captain Ladislav Krejčí had headed the Czechs into the lead (59th). Krejčí’s goal was the Czech Republic’s first World Cup goal in 20 years – the country last participated in a World Cup in 2006.
With the win in Zapopan near Guadalajara, South Korea drew level in Group A standings with co-host Mexico. The two teams meet on June 18 (local time). The Czech Republic plays South Africa on the same day.
Mexico had earlier won its opening match against South Africa 2-0. Julián Quiñones scored as early as the ninth minute, and Raúl Jiménez added a header after the break (67th). The match was marked by three red cards: South Africa’s Sphephelo Sithole (50th) and Themba Zwane (84th), as well as Mexico’s César Montes (90th+2), all saw straight red – Sithole and Montes for denying a clear goalscoring opportunity, Zwane for violent conduct. The game took place in front of around 80,000 spectators in the sold-out Azteca Stadium.
