The 2026 FIFA World Cup has kicked off, and Sportschau is on board with a special format. Under the title “Your World Cup,” reporters are filing from both host continents — Mexico and Germany. The series covers not just the action on the pitch but also the people and atmosphere surrounding the tournament. New episodes are released regularly on the Mediathek.

Mexico City: Party and Football Fever

Sportschau reporters Michael Bollenbacher and Martin Bromber headed to the Mexican capital. There they experienced the opening match of the 2026 World Cup between Mexico and South Africa — a game the hosts won 2-0. The reporters plunged into the country’s biggest football party, met exuberant fans, and drove through the streets with comedian Paul el Alemán. They also watched the opening ceremony, featuring a performance by Shakira, up close.

Germany: Flags and Anticipation

In parallel, Sportschau hosts Sebastian Rieth and Anna Klär searched for World Cup spirit in Cologne and Essen. In Essen, they met “Flag-Achim,” a cult fan from the Ruhr region who has decorated his entire street with German flags. He wishes the German national team the World Cup title. The first episode of the series is already available on the Mediathek.
