Serena Williams will play at Wimbledon for the first time since 2022. The 44-year-old and her sister Venus have received a wildcard for the women’s doubles from tournament organizers, who made the announcement. London tournament begins in June.
Serena Williams announced her return to tennis in early June. She previously competed at the Queen’s Club tournament in London. This afternoon, she is scheduled to play at the Berlin Tennis Open with her Czech doubles partner Karolína Muchová.
The Williams sisters have won six doubles titles at Wimbledon in their careers, the most recent a decade ago. They also received wildcards for the doubles event in 2000 and 2002, winning the title both times. Serena Williams holds 23 Grand Slam singles titles, several of them at Wimbledon.
Wildcards are awarded to players who do not meet the regular qualification criteria. Typically, renowned athletes receive these cards, for instance when returning after an injury break. The decision by Wimbledon organizers underscores the Williams sisters’ status as crowd-pullers.
