Meyer Werft and Siemens Energy Secure Billion-Euro Wind Power Contract

The Neptun Werft in Rostock-Warnemünde, together with Siemens Energy, has landed a billion-euro order for an offshore converter platform. According to Handelsblatt, grid operator 50Hertz awarded the contract worth 2.5 billion euros.

The order includes the construction of the “North Sea Connector 2” converter platform west of Sylt and the associated onshore facility. The platform will feed wind power from the North Sea into the German electricity grid. Construction in Rostock is scheduled to start in 2028, with commissioning planned for 2034.

For the struggling Neptun Werft, part of the Meyer Werft Group since 1997, the contract is a lifeline. It secures capacity utilization into the 2030s and creates around 500 new jobs in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. Meyer CEO Ralf Schmitz called the award a “significant milestone for Neptun Werft and thus for the entire Meyer Werft Group.”

The contract comes at a politically opportune time: on September 20, a new state parliament will be elected in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. Minister Manuela Schwesig (SPD) can send a positive signal with the project. However, 50Hertz emphasized that the award involved “no political influence or subsidies whatsoever.”

In 2023, Meyer already formed a joint venture with Belgian partner Smulders for building such platforms. According to the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, another billion-euro deal could follow: a converter contract originally planned for Spain might also go to Rostock.

EuroPulse reported on June 11, 2026, about Siemens Energy, which is benefiting from a global natural gas boom despite the crisis (https://europulse.today/siemens-energy-erdgas-turbinen-boom-trotz-irankrieg/).
