Germany’s 7-1 victory over Curaçao at the 2026 FIFA World Cup has revived memories of the biggest wins in tournament history. But as 24tv reports, the record does not belong to the German national team – it belongs to Hungary.

Back in 1954, Hungary had already beaten South Korea 9-0 at the World Cup in Switzerland – a novelty at the time. The team around Ferenc Puskás and Sándor Kocsis was considered the tournament favorite. Nearly three decades later, the Hungarians surpassed that record: at the 1982 World Cup in Spain, they crushed tournament debutants El Salvador 10-1. That victory remains the biggest in World Cup history to this day.

Hungary’s record has now stood for 44 years. No other team has since managed to win a match by a double-digit goal difference.
