Wolfsburg is pushing ahead with its rebuild following relegation from the Bundesliga. The club announced the signing of Fabian Reese from Hertha BSC on Wednesday. The Kiel-born player signed a contract until June 30, 2030.
Sporting director Pirmin Schwegler praised Reese as one of the strongest second-division players in recent years. “He is an absolute key performer and brings not only strong offensive qualities but also an extraordinary level of commitment, leadership, and mentality,” Schwegler said. Reese was captain and a figurehead at Hertha but decided to move after the club again failed to win promotion.
Reese himself was enthusiastic: “The way VfL fought for me feels like great appreciation. The highly professional environment, but also the values represented here by the club and the people around, were decisive for me.” The left winger moved from Holstein Kiel to Berlin in 2023 and had previously played for Greuther Fürth, Schalke 04, and Karlsruher SC. Overall, he has played 245 second-division matches with 48 goals and 13 Bundesliga appearances.
The transfer fee for Reese is reportedly around eight million euros. Hertha also benefits from salary savings. VfL had previously signed Elvis Rexhbecaj (FC Augsburg) and Fraser Hornby (SV Darmstadt 98). According to media reports, the Lower Saxony club has also agreed terms with HSV striker Robert Glatzel, though the transfer fee is still pending.
