The match was marked by an emotional minute of silence for striker Diogo Jota, who died in a car accident in Spain in July 2025. A photo of the player was shown on the stadium screens, and his parents in the stands were visibly moved.

João Neves put Portugal ahead, firing the ball into the top right corner. The Portuguese then pushed for a second goal, but the Congolese defense blocked all attacks. Just before halftime, DR Congo equalized from a corner kick.

In the second half, despite Portuguese dominance, the score remained 1-1. The Africans defended passionately and even created counter-attacking chances. Portugal thus missed out on the expected opening win in the group stage.
