Munich’s municipal cemeteries are responding to the ongoing drought with an immediate ban. Affected are free-standing candles, candles in lanterns, and battery-operated grave candles. The city justifies the ban on electric lights by saying they are hardly distinguishable from real candles and complicate risk assessment.
Additionally, the cemetery administration appeals to all visitors to refrain from smoking on the entire grounds. Even a discarded cigarette butt or match could cause severe fires in the dry vegetation. Inspections are to ensure compliance with the ban.
