Public Viewing in Munich: World Cup Without Central Fan Zone

Munich has not set up a central fan zone for the ongoing FIFA World Cup. As the Süddeutsche Zeitung reports, several locations are offering public viewing instead.

A corresponding motion by the SPD city council faction was unsuccessful, as the Süddeutsche Zeitung reports. The main reasons are organizational hurdles: the Olympic Stadium is being renovated, the Hans-Jochen-Vogel-Platz is occupied by concerts, and the Allianz Arena is unavailable due to ongoing events.

The largest public viewing is offered at the Hirschgarten, which is considered the world’s largest beer garden. All Germany games before 11 p.m., as well as the semi-finals and final, will be shown on four LED screens with 8,200 seats. 7,000 seats are freely accessible, 1,200 can be reserved. In the Werksviertel-Mitte district, the Knödelplatz attracts visitors with a 45-square-meter screen and 1,400 seats, up to 360 of which can be used without reservation.

The Kreisverwaltungsreferat (KVR) has issued a special regulation for the duration of the World Cup: games may be shown in outdoor areas of restaurants until 1 a.m. and from 6 a.m. However, for establishments with noise protection until 10 p.m., the outdoor area must be cleared by 10 p.m. The Hirschgarten announced that it cannot continue public viewing outdoors in the event of extra time, as the beer garden must be empty by 1 a.m.

For the World Cup final on July 19, there is a special offer at Königsplatz: as part of the Kinoliebe Summer Festival, the game will be broadcast on two screens measuring up to 144 square meters. Deck chairs cost five euros, more expensive tickets include drinks.
