The Mango coalition of Greens, SPD, Volt, and Left has made its first personnel decisions. Four department head positions in the Munich city council are being filled. The results are mixed, as the Süddeutsche Zeitung reports.

Only the nomination of Alexander Dietrich (CSU) for a department head post is convincing. The CSU man is considered professionally qualified and recognized across party lines. The other three candidates, however, reveal where the coalition’s weaknesses lie.

A government’s policy is only as good as its personnel, the commentary states. Expectations were high for the first decisions of the new coalition and new Mayor Dominik Krause (Greens). Now the names of the four department heads to be elected in July are known.

The commentary criticizes that the coalition, in its first decisions, breaks with a political principle. Instead of prioritizing competence and experience, posts are allocated according to coalition arithmetic. This weakens trust in the new city government’s ability to act.
