Munich’s municipal utilities (SWM) have reopened the five bridges in the Olympic Park to bicycle traffic. The company announced this on Monday. In March, the SWM had closed the crossings because the railings were only 120 centimeters high — the minimum height for bicycle bridges has been 130 centimeters since 2003.
The SWM said at the time they acted on the principle of “Safety first.” A new inspection has now shown that the bridges can be reopened in the short term. Among those affected was the Olympiasee Bridge, which carries an official city bike route toward the north of the city.
A permanent solution requires raising the railings. This needs approval from heritage protection authorities, as the Olympic Park is a listed monument. During the next maintenance work, the railing height will be adjusted in coordination with the authorities, a SWM spokesperson said.
