A group of European lawmakers launched an initiative on Tuesday to determine whether pressure from US Donald Trump prompted FIFA to lift the red-card suspension against Folarin Balogun. Balogun was on the field during the World Cup round-of-16 match against Belgium, which the US lost 4-1.
The letter is addressed to the 27 football associations of the European Union. The lawmakers urge the associations to formally request FIFA to investigate the decision-making process that led to the suspension being overturned.
Trump acknowledged contacting Infantino about the suspension but called the red card unfair. UEFA described the move as “unprecedented, incomprehensible, and unjustifiable.”
