The once-famous center of Siemensstadt in Berlin now looks dreary. A new weekly market is set to make the neighborhood more attractive, as Tagesspiegel reports.

The old center of Siemensstadt in Berlin, once known for the capital’s first shopping mall, is now considered dreary and uninviting. New developments such as an S-Bahn line, high-rise buildings, and a campus are set to upgrade the neighborhood. A key component is a planned weekly market intended to create more vibrancy.

Voigt wants to move her market from Nordbahnhof to the Europa-Viertel. Specifically, she has her eye on Otto-Weidt-Platz, right on the water near the Golda-Meir jetty. The market is to take place on Wednesdays from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m., and until 7 p.m. if there is enough demand.

Voigt hopes the market will enliven the district, which is home to many offices and apartments. However, she criticizes the current strict regulations for weekly markets: she argues that the composition should be left to the market vendors.
