Writer Christine Wunnicke has been awarded the Georg-Büchner-Preis, the German Academy for Language and Literature announced.

The jury praised Wunnicke’s “always surprising and masterfully conceived narrative work,” which is set in locations such as Hollywood, Nagasaki, or Paris. They particularly highlighted the “astonishing power of her oeuvre” and the “carefree obstinacy” of her novels.

Wunnicke, born in Munich in 1966, is known for historical novels. Her latest book “Wachs” (Wax) is set in 18th-century France and was shortlisted for the German Book Prize. She has previously received the Wilhelm Raabe Literature Prize and the Jean-Paul Prize.

The award ceremony will take place on October 24 at the Staatstheater Darmstadt. The laudatory speech will be given by writer Judith Schalansky. Georg-Büchner-Preis, endowed with 50,000 euros, is considered one of the most important literary awards in the German-speaking world.
