Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappé are locked in a neck-and-neck race for the all-time World Cup goal record. Miroslav Klose, who held the record before the tournament, has long been overtaken. Messi now has 21 goals, Mbappé 20. Both have scored eight times in this tournament alone.
Former Germany striker Miroslav Klose needed four World Cup appearances to score his 16 goals. Messi is playing his sixth World Cup in North America. Mbappé is only in his third.
Klose congratulated Messi after the Argentine broke his record. “I always said Messi isn’t bad,” the 48-year-old told the Süddeutsche Zeitung.
Klose had predicted before the tournament that his record would fall. “That’s perfectly fine. The record was going to be broken eventually, and I’m happy for Messi to do it. I’ve always been a huge fan of Messi,” Klose said, calling Messi “a genius.”
