Berlin's governing mayor Kai Wegner has called for consequences following Saturday's attack, emphasizing the need for a discussion on integration measures.

After the suspected Islamist attack on the sidelines of the CSD over the weekend, Berlin’s governing mayor Kai Wegner announced consequences. He stated that security forces and the Office for the Protection of the Constitution must be further strengthened. “Because at the end of the day, it’s about protecting our freedom, not the potential attacker,” Wegner said at an event in Berlin.

Wegner also emphasized the need to discuss integration measures, as the suspect was born in Berlin in 2005 and grew up in the city. “Obviously we didn’t reach him,” the CDU politician said. He called for all people in Berlin, regardless of their background, to feel a sense of belonging.

In the attack, a woman from Poland was fatally injured, while 29 other people were injured, some critically. The suspected perpetrator, Abdul B., was killed during a police operation. Wegner called for openly naming existing problems to prevent such acts in the future.
