Bünger stressed that higher walls would not prevent flight but only make it more dangerous. As long as there are no safe and legal routes, people will continue to be put in mortal danger. She thus contradicted the line taken by Alexander Dobrindt (CSU) and Friedrich Merz (CDU), who favor sealing off the border.
Dobrindt had used the events in Ceuta as an opportunity to announce an extension of German border controls. The success in combating illegal migration must be maintained and expanded, he told SPIEGEL. Earlier, Dobrindt and Merz had called on the Spanish government to return the migrants who entered to Morocco.
According to Spanish figures, around 60,000 people reached Ceuta from Morocco in recent days. 34 people died, and about 25,000 have already returned. Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez spoke of an attack on his country’s territorial integrity and blamed rumors spread by the smuggling mafia for the surge.
