Brazilian Wilton Sampaio will referee the first match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Mexico. The opening game pits hosts Mexico against South Africa, as Spiegel reports.
Germany’s sole referee in the tournament will have to be patient and will not be used in the opener. Further assignments for German officials during the tournament are possible.
