At the Cape Verdean “Bistro Atlantis” in Hamburg-Winterhude, several dozen fans gathered in blue jerseys and sang chants: “Olé, Cabo Verde, olé olé.” The mood was world-class, even though the team hasn’t played a game yet, reports NDR. Just qualifying for the tournament in Mexico, Canada, and the United States (June 11 to July 19) is seen by supporters as an incredible achievement.
Calu Ramos, who came to Germany from Cape Verde in 1991 to study, told NDR: “We are all very proud and happy that Cape Verde made it. That was a dream for all of us, even for me as a little child, that we would one day be at the World Cup.” He emphasized that the team is not going to America on vacation but wants to perform. Ramos himself used to play for 1. FC Cabo in Hamburg, a club with players from many nations.
At the bistro, Carlos Tavares cooks the traditional stew Cachupa – with corn, peas, sweet potatoes, pumpkin, cabbage, and meat or fish. He promises to show all the national team’s games, even though two group stage matches will kick off in the middle of the night German time.
