Julian Nagelsmann was pleased with his team’s attacking performance after the 7-1 victory over Curaçao. “We scored goals from set pieces, goals from possession, goals from counter-attacks after winning the ball,” the national coach told Tagesspiegel. Six different players scored the seven goals – only Felix Nmecha and Havertz scored twice.
Nmecha opened the scoring in the sixth minute, reminiscent of Philipp Lahm’s opening goal in the 4-2 win over Costa Rica at the 2006 World Cup. “I’m incredibly happy,” said the Dortmund World Cup debutant. Nagelsmann praised: “Felix did very well. He scored a great goal and won the penalty.” Nico Schlotterbeck also scored with a header – his first international goal in his 28th appearance.
The 7-1 win is Germany’s second-highest World Cup opening victory after the 8-0 against Saudi Arabia in 2002, which led to the final. Nagelsmann did not want to overrate the success but stressed: “In the end, you still have to score seven goals.” Havertz, named “Man of the Match” by FIFA, converted a penalty and scored the final goal. “We gained a lot of confidence,” said the striker.
