The reason for the increase is a heat-related rise in electricity consumption coupled with a decline in wind power generation. In the evening, solar power production also drops. On the electricity exchange, prices on the day-ahead market rose to more than 70 cents per kilowatt-hour at times around 8:45 p.m.
Companies with high electricity consumption in the evening hours are particularly affected. Patrick Schöwe, press spokesman for energy supplier Scholt Energy, attributes the price increase primarily to the ongoing heat: “During such a heatwave, one should not underestimate the cooling demand,” he explains.
The cause is the heavy reliance on fluctuating generation volumes from solar and wind power. As temperatures continue to rise over the week and many air conditioning systems are running, prices are likely to remain high for now.
