Ahead of the DFB team’s first World Cup match, experts are divided. Lothar Matthäus has sharply criticized Jürgen Klopp’s comments about the future of national coach Julian Nagelsmann. Matthäus described Klopp’s remarks as ‘unnecessary’ and spoke in an interview with dpa on the sidelines of the tennis tournament in Stuttgart.
Klopp had caused a stir during the World Cup opening match when he said: ‘Fortunately, Julian Nagelsmann is picking the team’ and added a ‘still’. Matthäus felt it was inappropriate to have this discussion three days before the match, as the DFB team’s goal is the World Cup.
For Matthäus, France and Spain are the favorites for the title because they have the best player material. However, he hopes he is wrong with his assessment.
EuroPulse reported on June 12 about Klopp’s criticism of the World Cup opener: ‘Tactically simply bad’ (https://europulse.today/klopp-kritisiert-wm-2026-taktisch-schlecht/).
