Munich’s city utilities (SWM) have called on the public to reduce water consumption to avoid shortages. After an urgent appeal by Mayor Dominik Krause (Greens) for residents to save water, the city council discussed the situation at its plenary session on Wednesday. The head of SWM’s water division stated that the utility has already taken further escalation steps. The situation is more tense than ever, but not yet critical.

The city utilities recommend refraining from watering gardens and lawns, not filling pools or paddling pools, and suspending car washing.

Although Munich’s drinking water supply is fundamentally stable, high temperatures and a lack of rainfall are increasingly straining available water resources. The utilities emphasize that residents can help relieve the system through their behavior without endangering their own fluid intake. They advise drinking enough to stay healthy.

Munich’s city utilities point out that sustainable water use is important not only during extreme heat. Conscious water conservation can protect groundwater and drinking water reserves and reduce wastewater volumes that require energy-intensive treatment. Further water-saving tips are available on the city utilities’ website.
