Russia attacked Kyiv with missiles again overnight into Thursday. Falling debris damaged the roof of the Presentation of the Virgin Mary Monastery, and fires and destruction were recorded in six city districts.

During the Russian missile attack on Kyiv overnight into Thursday, the roof of the Presentation of the Virgin Mary Monastery was damaged by falling fragments of a missile. According to Ukrinform, one person was killed and 24 others injured in the overnight attack on Kyiv. Fires and destruction were documented in six city districts of the Ukrainian capital.

According to President Volodymyr Zelensky, 21 missiles were aimed at Kyiv alone, arriving in three waves, as tagesschau.de reports. Infrastructure as well as residential and commercial buildings were damaged. In total, according to Zelensky, twelve regions of the country were targets of Russian attacks overnight; 34 people were injured, including five children. The sources give differing figures for the death toll: tagesschau.de names at least two dead and 34 injured for the whole of Ukraine, while Ukrinform reports one dead and 24 injured for Kyiv.

The news outlet spiegel.de reports, citing military sources, that the capital was hit with ballistic missiles late in the evening. The highest alert level was triggered at 22:06 local time, and two minutes later the Ukrainian Air Force reported the approach of several missiles. A second wave of attacks followed about an hour and a half later, without new impacts being reported. Mayor Vitali Klitschko stated that on the eastern bank of the Dnipro, residential buildings and a petrol station were damaged by debris; six people were injured.

The attack coincided with new diplomatic signals. According to the Kremlin, President Vladimir Putin has in principle agreed to a resumption of trilateral talks with Ukraine and the USA. According to Putin’s adviser Yuri Ushakov, the negotiations are to begin after 10 November and focus on building a security system for both countries after the end of the conflict, as tagesschau.de reports. The proposals from the Europeans and Ukraine conveyed by US special envoy Steve Witkoff contained “not much substance” from the Russian point of view, Ushakov said. Zelensky reacted positively to the offers of talks and proposed a meeting at the level of negotiators as soon as possible, by early November. At the same time, he told the US news channel Fox News that the front line must be frozen “now”.

Attacks were also reported from Moscow. The mayor of the Russian capital, Sergei Sobyanin, stated that 630 drones were launched towards the region overnight; most were destroyed by Russian air defence, and two people were injured. According to spiegel.de, 163 of the drones were heading for Moscow.
