The opening ceremony of the 2026 FIFA World Cup began on Thursday evening at the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City. Before the first match between Mexico and South Africa, a 90-minute show featuring music, dance, and artistic performances showcased Mexican culture.
A special highlight was the appearance of pop star Shakira, who performed the official World Cup song ‘Dai Dai’ alongside Burna Boy. FIFA stated in a release that the performance was meant to ‘set the stage for an unforgettable opening match, bringing together fans from around the world for a celebration of football, music, and culture.’
Mexico’s co-hosts, the United States and Canada, also held their own ceremonies before their opening matches. The US faced Paraguay in Los Angeles, while Canada took on Bosnia and Herzegovina in Toronto. Shakira’s performance will be shown in replay.
