England’s national team kicked off their World Cup qualifying campaign with a 4-2 victory over Croatia on Wednesday evening. Coach Thomas Tuchel praised his players’ reaction after a subdued first half. “I loved the response after halftime,” the German coach said.
Three Lions showed phases of thrilling attacking football and created numerous scoring opportunities. An older English reporter described the performance as the best attacking display by an England side at a major tournament he could recall. Tuchel stressed, however, that the team still needs to grow as the tournament progresses: “We can improve things.”
Earlier, England had already secured their World Cup ticket with a 5-0 win in Latvia – their sixth victory in six qualifiers. Tuchel’s only criticism was the number of photographers during the national anthem, who blocked his view of the players. He said he will only sing along when England reach the World Cup final.
