Donald Trump brought the World Cup to the United States, but he stayed away from the opening match. The president did not watch the game at the Los Angeles stadium but remained in Washington. Fans reacted with relief: “Otherwise the world would just talk about the unspeakable president again – and not about what really matters: football,” a fan named Dylan told the newspaper.

The US national team, meanwhile, delivered an outstanding performance, beating Paraguay 4-1. It was one of the team’s most convincing matches in a long time. Among those watching the game in the stadium were Paraguay’s Santiago Peña, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and FIFA President Gianni Infantino.

Trump had made the World Cup his own during his first term, even though the bid was submitted jointly with Mexico and Canada. He had the trophy placed in the Oval Office and set up his own World Cup working group in the White House. Little remains of the original North American partnership today.

EuroPulse reported on June 13, 2026, about Trump’s foreign policy maneuvers: In the agreement between the US and Iran, Trump accused Tehran of lying (https://europulse.today/usa-iran-abkommen-trump-teheran-luege/).
