According to Zeit, Elijah Just (7th, 55th) put New Zealand ahead twice, but Ramin Resaeian (32nd) and Mohammad Mohebi (65th) each equalized. Before the match, numerous Iranian flags from the pre-Islamic Revolution era were seen in the stadium, despite a FIFA ban. The flag featuring the lion and sun motif is now considered a symbol of the opposition. The Iranian national anthem was met with loud jeers.

The game began with an open exchange of attacks. After the early goal, Iran’s defense initially looked disorganized, and captain Chris Wood missed a chance to make it 2-0 shortly after (15th). Iran then grew into the game: Mehdi Taremi hit the post on a counterattack (23rd) before Resaeian equalized. A goal by Ali Nemati (45th+5) was ruled out for offside.

After the break, Just restored New Zealand’s lead, but Mohebi headed in the equalizer. In the closing stages, Iran pushed for a winner, but New Zealand held on for the draw. Iran next faces Belgium and Egypt, while New Zealand plays Egypt and Belgium.
