Qatar’s Boualem Khoukhi scored the equalizer in stoppage time and celebrated his goal exuberantly. Switzerland had taken the lead through a goal by Breel Embolo but could not hold on to the advantage. In the world rankings, Switzerland sits at 19th, Qatar at 56th.
Coach Murat Yakin surprised with his lineup: rising star Johan Manzambi from SC Freiburg initially sat on the bench. Qatar had an experienced coach on the sidelines in Julen Lopetegui, who was fired as Spain’s national coach shortly before the 2018 World Cup and made his World Cup debut as a coach.
