Referee instructor Lutz Wagner has commented on possible consequences for match officiating after the opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. As he told the FAZ, he believes there could be more red cards for so-called denying goal-scoring opportunities during this tournament. “Of course, something like that can set the tone,” the former Bundesliga referee explained, referring to the first match.

Wagner, who officiated 197 Bundesliga matches between 1994 and 2010, now works as a referee instructor for the German Football Association (DFB) and as a rules expert for various TV broadcasters. He emphasized that the clear line taken by the referees was already visible in the opening match between Mexico and South Africa. Brazilian Wilton Sampaio officiated the match, in which Themba Zwane received a yellow card.

EuroPulse reported on June 9, 2026, about the appointment for the opening match: Brazilian Sampaio will referee Mexico against South Africa (https://europulse.today/fussball-wm-2026-eroeffnungsspiel-schiedsrichter-sampaio/).
