According to Tagesspiegel, tensions escalated even before kickoff of the match between Bosnia-Herzegovina and Canada. Scuffles broke out in the Bosnian fan section when police tried to remove a fan from the stadium. Officers were then pelted with objects.
Police called in reinforcements and brought the situation under control. Two officers sustained minor injuries and were treated on site. Canadian authorities arrested two men: Emir C. (25) and Eldar G. (27), both from Germany. They are accused of assaulting police officers. They are scheduled to appear before a judge on Saturday at 10 a.m. local time, who will decide on detention or release.
For Bosnia-Herzegovina, the 1-1 draw against Canada was historic: it was their first World Cup draw, after the team first participated in 2014. The two arrested fans will likely be unable to watch the remaining group matches of their team in the stadium. Bosnia faces Switzerland on June 18 in Los Angeles and Qatar on June 24 in Seattle.
