The German national football team underwent an unusual security check before their flight to the World Cup match against Curaçao. According to the German Football Association (DFB), players were inspected directly on the tarmac of Smith Reynolds Airport in Winston-Salem. The procedure is part of the FIFA protocol for the World Cup.

Goalkeeper Manuel Neuer sat on a chair for the inspection, while Jamal Musiala was scanned by a security officer with a detector. The players’ silver team boxes were also opened and searched. Only then did the team board the plane to Texas.

The world football governing body FIFA organizes the travel of all teams to World Cup matches. Teams are not led through airport buildings but are taken directly to the aircraft on the tarmac. The match against Curaçao kicks off tonight at 7:00 PM in Houston and will be broadcast live on ARD and MagentaTV.
